Hooker Is A Hokie

Virginia Tech has added another big piece to its 2017 recruiting class. And the Hokies beat out some big names in doing so.

In an announcement on a local radio station in Greensboro Thursday afternoon, Dudley (NC) three-star quarterback Hendon Hooker announced he has committed to Virginia Tech. Hooker chose the Hokies out of a top six that also included Notre Dame, Missouri, NC State, Pittsburgh and North Carolina A&T.

Hooker is ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 19 dual-threat quarterback and No. 17 player in North Carolina for 2017. He was recruited by offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen and assistant coach Charley Wiles.

Hooker was also recruited a bit by Virginia Tech sophomore defensive back Mook Reynolds. The two grew up and played football together.

Hooker visited the Hokies unofficially last week and spent time hanging out with Reynolds.

"I mean, I know they have the new staff coming in," Hooker said this week. "They’ll be changing from a pro style offense to more of a run and gun, which really suits me. Me and Coach Fuente just hit it off since the first meeting. Mook being there just made me feel at home. Growing up, he used to give me a hard time on the football field and I was a smaller guy then. I feel really at home at Virginia Tech."

In Virginia Tech's 2017 recruiting class, Hooker joins Riverbend (Va.) four-star defensive end Tyjuan Garbutt, ranked No. 201 in the Rivals250 and Stonewall Jackson (Va.) three-star safety Devante Smith.
