REPORT: Mitchell VT's DBs Coach

Virginia Tech appears to have found its new defensive backs coach, just over two weeks from losing its previous coach.

As first reported by the Charleston Gazette-Mail, West Virginia defensive backs coach Brian Mitchell has accepted the same position with the Hokies. This has also been confirmed by HokieHaven.com and WSLS-NBC in Roanoke. Mitchell replaces Torrian Gray, who departed Feb. 3 for the defensive backs coach position at Florida.

Mitchell interviewed for the position yesterday.

Mitchell has coached the cornerbacks at West Virginia the past three seasons. From 2010-12, he was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at East Carolina, from 2006-09 he coached cornerbacks at Texas Tech and from 1995-2005, he coached cornerbacks at BYU.

A native of Waco, TX, Mitchell played at BYU from 1987-90 and was a seventh-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 1991. He played three seasons between the Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys.

Last season, Mitchell's secondary at West Virginia made 23 interceptions. That mark was good for second in the country at the FBS level.
